NINETEEN
âWish me luck.â
âLuck,â Shannon told me.
The band was taking a quick intermission and I was using this as an opportunity to hunt Marty down. As soon as they finished their last song, heâd set his saxophone back in its open case and headed toward the marina restrooms. I figured I could intercept him there and, with any luck, heâd offer up some new information for me.
It was at least worth a shot.
I got to my feet, being careful to avoid coming in contact with Kurt Dennisonâs boot again. The last thing I wanted was a personal injury lawsuit from him for aâ¦jammed toe.
It seemed as though a lot of concertgoers also had to use the restroom because navigating my way to the building was a little like maneuvering through the hordes of people at the Minnesota State Fair. I sidestepped walkers and strollers, and darted to the left and then to the right as I worked my way through the throngs of people.
I craned my neck as I got closer, hoping to see Marty in the sea of people either approaching or leaving the restrooms. My phone buzzed in my pocket but I ignored it. I wanted to talk to Marty first, before intermission was over.
The person calling me was insistent, though. It stopped buzzing and then started again. Sighing, I yanked it out of my pocket and checked the screen.
It was John.
I swiped the screen and brought the phone to my ear.
âWendy?â
âYes?â Who else did he think would be answering my phone?
âI donât suppose youâre having any luck, are you?â
I wasnât exactly sure what he was referring to. âLuck with what?â
âFinding the person responsible.â
I stood on my tiptoes, looking for Marty. âOh. Iâm working on it. Why, whatâs up?â
John sighed. âThings might have taken a turn for the worse.â
I had a sudden image of him sitting at the police station, making his one phone call. Maybe that was why heâd called repeatedly.
And then I wondered why in the world he would use his one call on me as opposed to a lawyer or someone who could actually bail him out of jail.
I was almost afraid to ask. âHow?â
His sigh was deeper this time. âMore supposed evidence that I was involved in the fire.â
I pressed the phone harder against my ear, trying to cut down on the noise around me. âWhat kind of evidence?â
He was quiet for a minute, and I was torn between waiting him out and telling him to hurry up. I didnât want to miss my chance to talk to Marty.
âItâs tied to my insurance,â he said.
âYour insurance? What does that have to do with anything?â
âI increased the premiums a few weeks back,â he said. âSimcoe thinks I did that because I was planning to burn the building down to collect the money.â
That made zero sense to me, and I said as much. âWhy would you do that?â
âI wouldnât,â John said flatly. âI donât want money. I want this business.â He sighed again. âBut you have to admit the optics look bad.
